About This Item
New York: Schocken Books, 1948. Hardcover. 128p., small hardbound book in 7.5x4.5 inch black cloth boards gilt and enclosed in the dust jacket. A fresh-looking copy with just the slightest edgewear, having been protected by the largely intact dust jacket, itself worn, rubbed and chipped. Front free endsheet has a neatly penned ownership datelined Chicago 1949, and an adhered dealer's label from 2001. Disagreement with both French and Sephardic society, managing to be intransigently opposed to all kinds of nationalisms and defending Dreyfus against not only antisemites but against the gingerliness with which fellow Jews ignored Dreyfus, must have been impossibly exhausting; Lazare died at age 38. From the title in hand one can see he was combative.
