Boston: james R. Osgood & Co, 1871. 1st. 12mo. 23pp. Woodcut illustrations by S. Eytinge, Jr. Maroon leather with 5 raised bands & gilt lettering to spine; TEG; marbled endpapers; original yellow wrappers in fine condition, preserved. Slight spine fading, small decorative gilt-illustrated leather bookplate else fine. Author's first book. In "Jim Bludso of the Prairie Belle", Hay memorializes Bludso's courage and selflessness in sacrificing his own life so that the passengers on his burning boat might survive. Hay served as private secretary & assistant to President Lincoln during the Civil War; he also served as Secretary of State under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt.
