About This Item
London: Darton, Longman & Todd, 1966.. "First Complete Edition". 8vo. xvi, 1547, (1), 498 pp., printed on india paper. Contemporary red half morocco over matching cloth sides, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered direct to one panel, all edges gilt, a prior owner's small discreet blindstamped device repeated to the two front endpapers. 6 pages of maps and plans, two in colour. A handsome copy. A new Catholic translation of the Bible from the original Greek and Latin, thus including the deuterocanonical books, was instigated by a Papal order in the 1940s and eventually appeared in French in 1956. This copy comes from was first English translation, taken largely from the French with occasional recourses to the original texts. One of the notable features of the work is that J.R.R. Tolkien was one of the translators, producing the translation of the Book of Jonah.
