About This Item
Japan 017 Hincks, Marcelle A. The Japanese Dance. London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1910, 32 pages, 8 photographic plates. Paperback, quarto size, 9" x 12". The cover has a number of drawbacks: the bottom right hand corner of the cover has a piece missing, same for top corner but less. All corners are dogeared and there is some spotting in the text. Paper covering spine is missing and frayed in parts, probably about 30 %. Overall, a decent reading copy but not much better. $8.50 Box A 77
On the positive side, this book once belonged to the famous Indian scholar Ananda Coomaraswamy with his signature on the front free endpaper, dated '10. Also, tipped on to the back lining paper is a review of the book from 1910, English publication
Ananda Kentish Muthu Coomaraswamy, 22 August 1877 − 9 September 1947 was a Ceylonese metaphysician, pioneering historian and philosopher of Indian art who was an early interpreter of Indian culture to the West. In particular, he is described as "the groundbreaking theorist who was largely responsible for introducing ancient Indian art to the West".
