New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1991. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth spine with gilt lettering and brown paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. 696pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Fine/near fine. Just a book club edition of this massive tome, but with a twist: Front flyleaf bears a fine archival decorative-edged bookplate bearing the full bold signature in turquoise fineline of famed Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson biographer Gay Wilson Allen (1903-95), who wrote a biography of William James that Lewis notes in his acknowledgments as "after nearly thirty-five years, by far the chief source of knowledge about his subject's career.
