Oakland, California: Smithsonian Company, 1913. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. First Edition of this vintage 1913 cookbook issued by the International Institute of Domestic Science, "planned for a family of four,'' a collection of "economical recipes designed to meet the needs of the modern housekeeper." Also contains lots of advice for women of the day, such as "a poor meal, served in slovenly fashion, will upset many a healthy man's temper for the day.'' In 507 pages, with black-and-white & color plates throughout, including color images of period dining rooms (Mission style, Colonial) & servingware. Membership certificate from the Institute, valid for 1 year, issued to the book purchaser, still attached in front of book! drawings. Hardcover book has brown cloth-covered boards with black lettering & design to front & spine. Condition is Poor: back board is completely detached & there is heavy rubbing & tearing to the front & spine. Inside, there are many random soiled spots, minor rips & tears; bottoms of pages 285-287 missing (no loss of recipes or text), others chipped/torn. Some scattered annotations in very light pencil; NO other writing/underlining/highlighting; not ex-lib.
