This is an absolutely stunning all-original 1870 edition of these legendary tales. One look at the binding, and you don't need to be a book aficionado to realize it is exceptional. Heavily embossed and dripping in gold embossments, this is an absolutely gorgeous edition, and the covers and spine are a work of bookbinding artwork. This book is the entire collection of stories and includes the coveted illustrations by John Tenniel and other master engravers of the 19th century. There is a good reason one of these is in the British Museum. For an age reference, this book was printed and bound over half a century before the First World War of 1914... It is exceptionally rare and the only one I can trace from 1870 with these elaborate green/gold covers. They don't make books this good anymore, and I don't think they ever will. I would snag this one before it's gone. I had one of these some years back, and it sold quickly.
The Ingoldsby Legends, also known as The Ingoldsby Ghost Stories, is a collection of strange myths, legends, and supernatural tales written by English clergyman Richard Harris Barham. Barham wrote under the pseudonym Thomas Ingoldsby and published the collection in various editions. This particular one is a ghost on the web, and I have never seen another one like it. The Gothic-style covers only add to its hauntingly beautiful ambiance. For an age reference, this book was printed while Abraham Lincoln was still president. The collection includes a wide range of stories, including ghostly encounters, witchcraft, medieval legends, historical events, and magic. It is a one-in-a-million book that has been well-kept for over 150 years.
It contains tales of Witches, Ghosts, Magic, and enchantments. As stated, this is a hard-to-come-by edition printed in London and the only one I can trace with this binding. They don't make books like these anymore, and they never will; I would snag this one... When it's gone, I can't replace it.
The overall condition of this book is very good despite being printed over 150 years ago. It does have some of the typical aging attributes associated with a 19th-century volume, including some average age and shelf wear to the covers. However, they are exceptional for this print year. The interior pages are naturally age-toned, and many have a damp stain to the margin area, although it is only aesthetic, and the paper quality is very good. It is tightly bound (not shaky) and exceptionally well-preserved for its age—a lovely edition of an extraordinary book.
