About This Item
BCA, 1991. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. h/b 154 pages, condition is very good. Bravery on the field of battle has been an aspect of war since conflicts first began. 'Heroism under enemy fire' and 'selfless devotion to duty in the face of overwhelming odds' are phrases echoed in all armies, since bravery is not dependent upon nationality or cause. The recognition of such acts, however, is more affected by fate, and the infantryman has historically often been passed over in favour of the dashing cavalryman or the ace fighter pilot. The German foot soldier in World War Two has been all but forgotten in favour of more glamorous Wehrmacht comrades, but in this follow-up to his previous work, Aces of the Reich, Gordon Williamson concentrates solely on the outstanding feats of bravery performed by 32 infantry aces. The result is a valuable insight into the experiences of the foot soldier and of human reactions in a war situation.
