About This Item
Boston, Massachussetts, USA: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1992. ARC . Soft cover. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This is an "Uncorrected Proof" copy, often referred to as an "Advance Reading Copy" [or ARC] and an "Unedited, Uncorrected Page Proof" - fast becoming an attractive collectible, as it precedes the First Edition. Miguel Angel Kanak is a young contemporary Mayan Indian from the small village of Akabal in an unnamed but easily guessed Central American country that has long been plagued by both leftist and rightist violence. Swayed by a charismatic Communist guerrilla leader, Miquel blows up an army barracks and is tracked back to his village. His pursuer, a hard-boiled army lieutenant, gives the villagers an ultimatum - do "justice" or face the consequences. Most of the book examines the moral struggle of the villagers to decide just what justice is in this case. 313 pages. CONDITION: a bright, tight, square, unmarked, uncreased, likely unread copy with negligible shelf-wear, This handsome, collectible copy is now in a clear, protective polypropylene bag.
