About This Item

New York: Bonanza Books. Very Good/Very Good. 1965. Hard Cover. Sm 4to 24.4 x 19.3 x 3 cm 0517088800 Dust jacket slight wear to edges, price clipped. Bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. b/w and colour plates. 650 illustrations 16 in colour. xxvi, 390 pages clean and tight. This lavish encyclopedia contains over six hundred and fifty plates—sixteen pages of them in full color—illustrating more than a thousand documentary specimens of marked British pottery and porcelain of the period from 1700 to 1900. The illustrations have been collected from a wide variety of sources—from local as well as national museums, from private collectors, and from antique dealers—and the majority of specimens have not previously been illustrated in any reference book. Indeed, many documentary examples illustrate the work of potters never before represented in a book. Although affording a companion volume to the author's highly praised Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks, this handsome book is, nevertheless, self'con' tamed. Its contents include a summary of British ceramic art, an outline of the development of the pottery industry and, in relevant sections, information on the major firms. All illustrations are accompanied by basic information on manufacturers, wares, period, form of mark, etc. A comprehensive glossary is linked with the illustrations to enhance the reader's appreciation of the various types of ceramic body and styles of decoration, and the bibliography provides an important guide to further detailed information. There is no doubt that this illustrated encyclopedia will prove absolutely invalu'able to the beginner, the general collector, and the specialist alike. .
