About This Item

London, 1821. Third Edition. Half Leather. Near Fine binding. A satire, by William Combe, of William Gilpin's notion of the 'Picturesque,' who famously said that Tintern Abbey might be improved with "a mallet judiciously used." Illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson, the famous English caricaturist at the height of his work, who often would engrave as well as illustrate the plates himself. The third edition of the three volume set. Additional title page for Volume I & III, engraved. Collates complete, with 31 colored, engraved plates in Vol. I; 24 in Vol. II; 25 in Vol. III, including the frontispieces and engraved title pages.~~Three quarter red morocco, over red marbled paper, with lettering and floral devices stamped in gilt on the spine. Top edges gilt. Original cloth covers and spines bound in at the rear of each volume. Foxing to the plates of Volume III, especially the frontispiece and engraved title. Overall, a handsome copy of the oft-printed 19th century color plate book. Near Fine binding.
