About This Item

Chicago: David L. Streeter, Successor to Streeter & Tucker, 134 State St. & 68 Madison St., Donohue & Henneberry, Printers, 1884. Oblong 16mo. 7.5 x 5.2 in. 32 pp. With woodcut engraved text illustrations throughout. Colour chromolithograph softcovers, decorative lettering front cover, two children standing beside giant shoe on back (tear & scuffing affecting small part of image on back cover, minor corner creasing front cover), still G copy. First edition of this scarce catalogue for American footwear in the Gilded Age. The American shoe industry expanded quickly in the 1880’s, and this was also the period of time when shoes made specifically for right and left feet became available, as well as standardized sizes and widths. Styles for women included within encompass leather button high-tops, laced low shoes, lace high-tops, walking boots, French pumps & Oxford Society shoes, house wear slippers, and more. Also featured are men’s boots, children’s shoes, and assorted styles and instructions. Streeter (1846-1867) had moved from New York to Chicago in 1867 to partner with Tucker, and would go on for the succeeding decades to operate his successful, and popular shoe manufacturing until the beginning of the 20th Century. No copies in Worldcat.
