About This Item

New York: Hungarian American Council for Democracy, 1945. Newsletter. 4p., 8.5x11 inch bulletin, very good. Bela Lugosi is listed as President, with Count Michael Karolyi cited as Honorary President. Under the leadership of Lugosi, the Hungarian immigrant actor of Dracula fame, the Hungarian American Council for Democracy had opposed the fascist wartime government of Hungary. The Council also pressed the Roosevelt administration to admit Hungarian Jewish refugees. Here, in the months after the war, the Bulletin examines the devastation left behind after the German army's retreat, and speaks in supportive terms of steps taken by the new Communist government.
