About This Item
London & New York: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd / E.P. Dutton & Co. Inc, 1953. Small octavo, original blue cloth lettered in gold on spine, small blindstamp on front panel, patterned endpapers. 372 pp. Illustrated throughout with beautiful and delicate pen-and-ink drawings by R. Anning Bell. Two old ink names / inscriptions on front endpapers, dated 1967 and 1979, plus a small old price in pen (60¢) on front free endpaper. Issued as a volume in the publisher's 'Everyman's Library - Books For Young People Section', this edition has a lovely colour pictorial dust jacket with artwork on the front panel signed "BGS". A very good copy in a nice example of the colour pictorial dust jacket which has small chips at edges but is intact and quite pleasing.
¶ The Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm are well-enough known that I really don't need to describe them here; this edition, however, is curious. Originally issued by Dent in their Everyman's Library series in 1906, the book was reprinted often and in many different formats and is ubiquitous and pretty common. However, in the 1950's Dent offered their "Books for Young People" as a separate lineup of 33 titles, 18 of which were offered "in new pictorial wrappers in colour", all of which are extremely scarce today.
