Boston: Small, Maynard and Co, 1901. First Edition. Octavo (19cm). Red cloth, stamped in black and gilt; [iv],[viii],418,[8]pp; 4pp at front on the contest and 8pp of publisher's ads at rear. Straight and sound, spine faded, lightly rubbed at extremities: Very Good.
12 short stories by American authors, all presented anonymously. The publisher offered a prize for correct guesses of authorship; this copy includes a blank "guessing coupon," and a rubber stamp noting that the deadline for the second round of the competition was May 31, 1902. Contributions were requested from numerous authors, including Hamlin Garland, George W. Cable, Joel Chandler Harris, Sarah Orne Jewett, Thomas Nelson Page, Frank Stockton, Booth Tarkington, Mark Twain, Owen Wister, and others.
