About This Item
Venetiis [Venice]: Per Venturinum Rossinellum [Venturino di Rossinelli]..., 1540. Folio. ff. [vi], 296. Imprint from colophon, title in red and black with woodcut vignette set within a historiated border made up of four blocks, and with numerous woodcut head-pieces and initials in the text; some spotting and staining at intervals, mostly marginal; thin vellum over boards, heavily worn, rebacked retaining most of the original material, front endpaper renewed. Early ownership inscription (1576) to lower margin of title, and two ink stamps of the Biblioteca Comunale Verona - the second indicating that our volume was a duplicate. The printer, Venturino di Rossinelli (active c. 1535-1555, publisher of the first Italian translation of Euclid), attempts to incorporate most of the available commentary on the poet Horace compiled between antiquity and his own day: Antonio Mancinelli, Pseudo-Acro, Pomponius Porphyrio, Giovanni Britannico, Josse Badius, Aldo Manuzio, Niccolo Perotti, Matteo Bonfini, Franciscus Asulanus and Servius. Horace's text is surrounded by an ocean of scholia, although di Rossinelli carefully differentiates typographically between text and gloss. Worldcat locates 4 copies in North America, OCLC: 48626021; 1 in the UK (Leeds), OCLC: 1184634120 and 1 in France: OCLC: 470069676 (BNF). Book
