About This Item

London: Richard Bentley, 1847 . First edition. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 6". George Samuel Measom; W. Measom. Two smartly bound first edition volumes discussing the favoured locations of the most famous poets in the English language. Illustrated throughout. The complete two volume first edition set of prolific English writer and historian William Howitt's study of the lives of 'Eminent British Poets', in half morocco bindings, and illustrated throughout.Within these works, Howitt details the residences and regularly visited locations of the most recognisable poets of the English language, with the publisher's advertisement explaining that it was necessary to excluded 'the Dramatic Poets for separate treatment' for the sake of length. With such figures as Chaucer, Shelley, Spencer Byron and Keats explored in volume I, and Felicia Hemans, Baillie, Wordsworth and Tennyson in volume II.Illustrated throughout with vignette illustrations of the locations mentioned by British engravers George Samuel Measom and W. Measom. In half morocco bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips, and paper covered boards. Rubbing to spine tails and joints, most prominent to rear joint of volume I, where there is loss to leather, not affecting binding. Rubbing to extremities, with loss to leather to head of front board of volume I. Bookseller's labels to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. The odd spot throughout, most concentrated to the first few leaves of each volume. Very Good
