After his service in the Mexican War, Boynton taught at West Point. "His long residence at West Point, with its revolutionary associations, turned his interest to historical matters, and led to the publication of (this work), a large part of which is devoted to a minute study of the topography of the neighborhood, from a military viewpoint, to the system of defenses erected during the Revolution, and to the administration of the fortress during that period." The preface is a quotation from Gen. Winfield Scott, who met secretly with Abraham Lincoln in Philipstown during the Civil War.

This edition does not have the reproduction of the chromolithograph " A View of West Point on Hudson's River by Major L'Enfant Engineer, 1780". Howes B672; Nestler 1087. Tall 8vo, xviii, 416pp, 15pp publishers adverts at the back (misnumbered 18). Plates, illustrations in text, one fold-out map. Publishers brown pebbled cloth nicely respined retaining much of the title. A very nice copy of a scarce edition.
