About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1900. (UK) Edition Not Stated Three volume set: Owner's signature to the three volumes, owner's inscription to volume I, covers dull but hinges are good, with rubbing and tiny tears to spine extremities and to cover corner tips, Volume II has some nicks at the rear spine edge just breaking the cloth and as well there is a 5 x 120 mm strip of cover cloth missing from the spine and neat and precise cut-away for some unfathomable reason, many pages are stll uncut, thus Good(_) only; no Dj perhaps as issued. All voumes are 23 x 14.5 cm, dark red cloth with blind embossed horizontal leaf border to front covers, gold spine titles. Volume I: xxvi, 355pp; bibliographical note by Alfred W. Pollard; Author's preface, Sonnets; Volume II: viii, 365pp. Volume III: ix, 349pp, glossary. No Illus. All three volumes bear a blind embossed stamp to the lower right of the title page stating " Presentation copy". This edition uses the translation made by Thomas Shelton in 1607, preceding that of any other foreign language, its nearest rival being the French rendering by Cesar Oudin (1614). The Sheldon editions were supposed to have been thumbed out of existence but in 1895 the British Museum had the good luck to unearth a copy from the library of Lord Ashburnham. In this present edition the text of the 1620 Sheldon edition has been followed throughout the whole work in order to introduced the few corrections made by Sheldon in the first part of his translation. Sheldon's translation was "as uniformly exact as it is uniformly racy and untrammelled". A heavy set. (5.9 JM HOQ 101/4. Hardcover. Good (-)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

About JWMah

JWMah has been selling out-of-print, used and rare books on the Internet since 1997. Our stock consists of a good balance of fiction and non-fiction books in a wide range of subjects. We also sell classical Lp records. Our Cookbooks, Canadiana, Travel and Exploration catalogues are worth a look. We examine each book that we sell and try our best to grade the books conservatively. We are strictly an internet business, so usually the books put up for sale are in stock. We try update our books every two days so that our listings are as fresh as possible. It is best to contact us by e-mail or by telephone to reserve a book, as some books sell quickly. We are located in Canada's westcoast and we ship internationally.
