About This Item
James R. Osgood and Company, Boston: 1884., 1884 407p. Inked ownership of James Latimer, June 1885 on title page. Latimer (born 1836) was a prominent York County, PA Judge and staunch Republican. Sm. 8vo. Original full green cloth binding. Gilt lettered spine. Hardbound. First Edition. These campaign guides were once rather common, but this one (issued for the election of 1884) seems quite scarce. The 1884 United States presidential election saw the first Democrat elected President of the United States since James Buchanan in 1856. Governor Grover Cleveland of New York defeated Republican James G. Blaine of Maine. The election was set apart by unpleasant mudslinging and shameful personal allegations that eclipsed substantive issues, for example, civil administration change. It was a historically significant election, as Cleveland was the only Democratic president between Andrew Johnson, who left office in 1869, and Woodrow Wilson, who began his first term in 1913, representing a disruption of the period of Republican domination of the presidency between Reconstruction and the Great Depression. PRES BOX 1. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.
