About This Item
First Edition [2], 400 pp, 8vo. (20 * 12cm), title, half-title, engraved frontispiece by Romanet; allegorical engraving of Mercury and Cupid titled: Mercure conduit par l amour, ou invention du langage et de l'ecriture, two folding plates, one printed in four colours, errata, text in French. Bound in early mottled calf with gilt borders, gilt-decorated spine with raised bands; marbled endpapers and edges. Published by Chez l'Auteur, Boudet, Valleyre, la Veuve Duchesne, Saugrain, Ruault (Paris), 1776. Light wear to boards; short closed tear at top margin of p. 384. A very good example. This copy has notable provenance containing the engraved bookplate of the distinguished French neurologist Dr François Moutier (1881-1961). Dr Moutier was also a very well respected book collector with an impressive private library of several thousand books. The first separate edition of this treatise on the universal origin of speech and language. A scarce and sought-after work, its importance is due to the presence of the large folded color plate engraved by Gautier-Dagoty, being the first such plate printed in four colors. The plate shows the tongue, larynx and the organ of the voice in all its component parts. Please contact us for shipping costs if ordering from outside the UK.
