A smartly bound and profusely illustrated copy of Alain-Rene Lesage's picaresque novel 'Gil Blas', illustrated by Ernest Meissonier. Written in the original French. 'Gil Blas' is a adventurous novel following the eponymous character, who is born into poverty. He goes to University and is suddenly faced with a bright future, before being forced to help robbers, and has to face jail time. The novel follows him through his careers and his rising to royal court. Written by Alain-Rene Lesage. Lesage was a novelist and playwright, who was best known for this novel, as well as his comical works 'The Devil Upon Two Sticks', and 'Turcaret'. Illustrated profusely throughout. Illustrated by Ernest Meissonier. Meissonier was a classicist painter and sculptor, and was renowned in his time for the fine detail in his painting. In a full crushed morocco binding with gilt decoration to the boards and spine. Externally, spine. Light rubbing to the spine. A little fading to the spine. Hinges are starting slightly but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Very Good
