Lovely, sumptuously illustrated guide to herbs, in 255 pages, with full-page woodcuts faithfully reproduced from the original 16th-century ones found in Pierandrea Mattioli's "Commentaries on the Six Books of Dioscorides." These are well-regarded as "among the finest herbal illustrations every printed." All plates are present & pristine! Some colored pages throughout text as well, & each plate bears the family & genus names of the plant represented. A FIRST EDITION, first printing hardcover from 1965, this oversized hardcover has a light green quarter cloth-wrapped spine with gilt lettering & patterned paper over boards (in lovely mid-century modern burnt orange & harvest green colors!). Condition is VG: interior is exceptionally clean, appears unread. Pages are of a cream white vellum quality, binding is straight & strong, NO writing/underlining/highlighting; NOT ex-lib. Only flaws are very mild edgewear/rubbing & some darkening along top edges of both boards, as well a a small circular stain to upper center of front boards. NO DJ.
