"In the first of three chapters I have atempted to relate Henry James's life to his work. In the second chapter I have analysed the novels & stories in the groups into which they apperar to fall. In the third chapter I have related the novels and stories to each other in an attempt to see them as an expression of James's attitude to life, and thus to win some glimpse of the elusive "figure" - "the string on which his pearls are strung."
