About This Item

San Diego: Schanes and Schanes, 1981. Vintage "The Heavy Metal Original Pencil Art Portfolio" from the 1981 animated film, one of 1000 copies, this being number 0823. The portfolio, housed in an illustrated folder with an Introduction and credits, features seven original graphite and non-photo blue pencil drawings created during the film's production.

Each of the 1000 copies issued contained a different and unique set of original drawings.

This copy comes from the estate of screenwriter and anime producer Carl Macek, author of the 1981 book "The Art of Heavy Metal, the Movie: Animation for the Eighties." Each drawing features a "Heavy Metal Portfolio" blind stamp and each are stamped with the corresponding copy number "0823."

The seven original drawings in the portfolio each derive from one of the film's seven main segments, "Soft Landing," "Harry Canyon," "Den," "Captain Sternn," "B-17," "So Beautiful and So Dangerous," and "Taarna," less the film's second story, "Grimaldi," which served as the film's framing story, linking together the seven distinct segments. Each of the drawings are unique, and were created by studio animators during the film's production as source drawings from which cell paintings were made.

An indisputable cult classic, the animated science fiction and fantasy anthology film was based on stories and comics from (the seminal) "Heavy Metal" magazine, published from 1977-2023. The loosely linked collection of vignettes, featuring an abundance of violence, comedy, and buxom characters, were based on the art and stories of Richard Corben, Angus McKie, Dan O'Bannon, Thomas Warkentin, and Bernie Wrightson, and featured voice actors John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis, among others, as well as an influential and best selling soundtrack which included Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, DEVO, Journey, and others.

Original drawings: 12 x 10 inches to 14 x 11 inches. Near Fine. Each drawing with a three hole punch along the bottom edge.

Folder: Bi-fold with an illustrated glossy exterior and an illustrated matte interior: 11 x 14 inches. With faint toning and light edgewear, else Near Fine.
