About This Item
Knopf, 1965. Hardcover. Very Good. 8x5x1. Signed by Author. First edition with original Williams letter. 8vo. Blue cloth, price-clipped dust jacket. xii. 324pp, vi. Illustrations, 10 maps. Very good/very good. Mild bit of dust jacket edgewear. Tight, attractive first edition of this uncommon volume, bearing a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a typed note signed by Williams, 1p, 8½" x 11," Baton Rogue, Louisiana, March 21, 1961. Addressed to Gilbert Twiss (Chicago Daily News journalist and Chicago Civil War Round Table member who co-authored a history of that Round Table with Elmer Gertz). Near fine, On LSU letterhead, Williams chats with Twiss about a Round Table visit to Vicksburg and recommends Port Hudson, near Baton Rouge. Signed "Harry" in bold pencil. Williams won the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize for his 1970 biography of Huey Long. Signed Williams volumes are rarely encountered, and a copy with a letter such as this is most unusual. Ralph C. Gordon, noted medical history scholar/collector, has made occasional underlinings and margin squiggles on a few pages near the center of the volume.
