Boston: Houghton, Osgood & Co., 1880. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. HAWTHORNE'S WORKS published in 1889 as a 23-volume set half-bound in calf. Spines have six compartments with series title and volume titles in gilt. Sextodecimo 6.75" tall, 4.25" wide. Most bear the bookplate of Eleanor Vinton, 2nd poet laureate of New Hampshire. Set includes: THE SCARLET LETTER, HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES, FANSHAWE, OUR OLD HOME, SEPTIMUS FELTON, MARBLE FAUN, BLITHEDALE ROMANCE, TWICE TOLD TALES, WONDER-BOOK FOR GIRLS AND BOYS, MOSSES FROM AN OLD MANSE, TANGLEWOOD TALES, DOLLIVER ROMANCE, SNOW IMAGE, GRANDFATHER'S CHAIR, AMERICAN NOTE-BOOKS, ENGLISH NOTE-BOOKS, and FRENCH & ITALIAN NOTE-BOOKS. Condition -- most endpapers lightly foxed with dampstain to edges, but no foxing or dampstain to textblock in any volume. Rubbing to leather on some spines. SCARLET LETTER front hinge starting, & several small stains to front endpapers. Joints sound on all volumes. Abrasion to front cover of FANSHAW, ENGLISH NOTE-BOOKS vol. II, and GRANDFATHER'S CHAIR. Overall good to very good, with no markings and tight textblocks in all volumes.
