About This Item

A facsimile reprint of Yoshida's significant 1974 photobook of the same title.

Ruiko Yoshida, who worked as an announcer for NHK broadcasting in Japan, received a Fulbright scholarship to study broadcast journalism at … Columbia University in New York, where she [majored in] photojournalism. Yoshida, who briefly married a white American school colleague active in the Civil Rights movement, settled in Harlem, the New York City neighborhood just north of Columbia University. Over the next ten years, she recorded the streets of Harlem, her neighbors and her friends … In 1974, Yoshida published Harlem: Black Angels, a softcover photobook that focuses on the children of Harlem. During her time in New York, she befriended another Japanese woman married to a Black man. A photograph of the couple's biracial son Zulu graces the cover of this book.—What They Saw: Historical Photobooks by Women, 1843-1999, pp 216-617.
