Hardcover. 1st edition limited to 550 xxvi, 472, xii pp. Octavo in original red cloth with gilt lettered crested spine, gilt top edge, others uncut; with three plates (including frontispiece) and folding map (in rear pocket). Includes list of contents, index, list of the Champlain Society, members, and subscribing libraries. Minor scratches on the front cover. Very good condition. James Hargrave (1798-1865), started in the Hudson's Bay Company as a clerk in 1821, made chief trader in 1833, then became chief factor in 1844; most of the time posted at York Factory. 1938
