[iii]-xvi+368(lacking the half-title page), publisher's anchor device on title page, text illustrations, appendix; nineteenth century calf, boards with double gilt ruled border, name and crest of King Edwards Free Grammar School Birmingham (dated 1844) in gilt at centre of upper board, the boards lightly worn, most of the original gilt decoration on the spine rubbed away, the spine worn and chipped at extremities, lacking the title label, joints tender; marbled edges; marbled endpapers, hinges cracking, early inked signature on blank preliminary leaf, a few leaves faintly creased, scattered light foxing and soiling; William Pickering, London, 1837. Fourth edition. *First published in 1833 as the fourth volume in the series of Bridgewater Treatises. ' The anatomical work of Bell was the most important in the British Isles during the early part of the 19th century' [Garrison & Morton, p. 63].
