** THERE IS MUCH MORE TO THIS BOOK THAN I COULD EVER PHOTOGRAPH **
This book is a gem of a find for anyone interested in real old magic, spells, divination, sorcery, shamanism, and all aspects of the Occult. It contains a mass compendium of witch and gypsy lore that dates back centuries in the making. It is in very nice condition from cover to cover. This edition is scarce, and I rarely see one for sale on any book retailer on the web. I would snag it before someone else does.
This book discusses spells, incantations, and talismans used within Roman culture and the more practical magic they used in their interaction with the Gorgios—the non-Gypsies. This latter topic provides some of the most interesting and instructional reading. Leland gives some generalized methods of fortune-telling that any prospective psychic would do well to study, as well as the details of the 'Great Secret.'
The Gypsies, who call themselves Rom or Romany, are a nomadic culture that originated in India during the Middle Ages. They migrated widely, particularly to Europe, where they worked as farm laborers, metalworkers, scrap dealers, and horsetraders. They also made a living as fortune tellers and grifters. Persecuted in WWII and discriminated against to this day, the Rom has a long tradition of magic and shamanism. As Leland points out, these practices have parallels with those of other traditional pagan cultures around the world.
Gypsy life has a romantic appeal, and Leland, who popularized Gypsy lore in this and other books, played no small part in this image-making. However, Leland makes it abundantly clear that life on the road was hard. The Rom people are to be admired for their survival skills in a hostile world and for the longevity and persistence of their culture.

Charles G. Leland was a scholar and folklorist who moved to England in 1870, where he learned to speak the Romany language of the Gypsies and was accepted into Gypsy circles, who freely shared their knowledge of traditional witchcraft, talismanic magic, amulets, etc. with him. He published two books on the subject, although he is best known for his Aradia: Gospel of the Witches, a book that profoundly impacted the modern rebirth of witchcraft.
