About This Item
Rio de Janeiro: Jose Olympio. Very Good. 1968. Fourth Edition. Paperback. 183 pages; Contents clean and tight in original wrappers; wrappers worn at spine ends and corners. B&W illustrations and folding map. Text in Portuguese. Recife is the largest city in the Northeast region of Brazil. Recife is located where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. Its name is an allusion to the stone reefs that are present by the city's shores. The many rivers, small islands and over 50 bridges found in Recife city center characterize its geography and gives it the moniker of the "Brazilian Venice." Gilberto Freyre (1900 1987) was a Brazilian sociologist, anthropologist, historian, writer, painter, journalist and congressman, born in Recife, Northeast Brazil. He is one of the great Brazilian cultural interpreters of the 20th century, best-known for his sociological treatise Casa-Grande & Senzala (published in English as The Masters and the Slaves), a classic of modern cultural anthropology and social history. .
