Quarter-vellum and cloth, 8vo, 22 cm,. vi, [1], 228 pp, ills. Rosenblum comments: "Traces the collecting of books from antiquity to the nineteenth century. Some of the figures here, like Sir Thomas Bodley and Petrarch, are familiar, though the Eltons' discussion even in these cases in valuable. Other figures are likely to be less familiar to the general reader. Niccolo de Niccoli of Florence, for example, an important figure in Renaissance humanism, assembled one of the finest libraries in Italy and allowed the general public to use it. Gian-Vincenzio Pinelli of Padua also built a library open to scholars. Well-written and attractively illustrated. Copy No. 127. Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on front pastedown endpaper, his short note on front free endpaper and a few sidelines to the text, upper corners bumped, spine somewhat marked and covers a little fingersoiled, otherwise Near Very Good.
