About This Item

(London): Andre Deutsch, 1959. First printing. Near fine in near fine jacket.. First UK edition of Roth's novella, in unusually nice condition and with the scarce and striking dust jacket. GOODBYE, COLUMBUS first appeared in THE PARIS REVIEW, one of the prestigious publications to offer its exhilarating approval to a young Roth: "In the beginning it simply amazed him that any truly literate audience could seriously be interested in his store of tribal secrets, in what he knew, as a child of his neighborhood, about the rites and taboos of his clan - about their aversions, their aspirations, their fears of deviance and defection, their underlying embarrassments and their ideas of success" (Roth, "Goodbye Newark"). 7'' x 4.75''. Original blue cloth with gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped (10s 6d) pictorial dust jacket by Adrian Bailey. 157, [1] pages. Offsetting to front endpapers, faint staining to lower margins of pages 25-30. Minor chipping and edgewear, light soil to jacket.
