[minimal shelfwear only to book; jacket mildly edgeworn, a bit scuffed on the front and rear panels]. An early novel by this North Carolina-born writer, set in the early 1800s, about a German doctor who settles in the mountains of North Carolina, where his life is complicated by three females: his "delicate French wife," the "barefoot, wilful river girl" who becomes his lover, and the daughter he fathers by the river girl. .
