About This Item

London, UK: Readers Union, 1975. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. h/b 191 pages, condition is very good. Here are the characters and events of Ashton-under-Hill and the countryside around it from 1880 to the end of the century, 'a fascinating time when even the grass on the well-trodden footpaths seemed greener'. lt is indeed amazing how one small region furnishes such a wealth of material, always with a genuine basis of fact; the death of a shepherd and his dog struck by lightning as they went to tend the flock on the hill, the coming of the first 'iron horse', the new mechanical reaper, the clearing of Bevington Waste for the cultivation of corn and apple and plum orchards, a marathon job of reclamation. The people of this book and what they are achieving really matter. For, as Fred Archer writes in his Preface, 'This part of England is not only renowned for the beauty of the countryside but for the quality of its characters. So I seem compelled to hark back to the time when the village parson kept a cow and a horse in his orchard, and the smell of the good earth and stable had not been polluted by diesel fumes . . . Come wind come weather, life went on.'
