Fine/Very Good. limited to 2,350 copies [7.5x10.75"]; 75 pp., [2] illustrations narrative and colophon, 24 halftones and line drawings in text of various artists from Bancroft Library collections; Light beige buckram cloth on covers with gilt lettering on spine and gilt illustration of hand with ink pen, map of Placer Regions of California on front and parcel map of Sacramento City on back end papers, all edges trimmed; Fine covers and text; Plain dust jacket with handwritten title in pencil on spine; Minimal shelf wear with several light stain spots to dust jacket. [Kurutz 605d]. Dr. Jacob Davis Babcock Stillman (1819-1888) was a physician that starts this narrative while on a six month trip on the ship Pacific around Cape Horn. He arrived in San Francisco on August 5, 1849. He then traveled to the god mining areas around Sacramento and provide a daily record of Sacramento life. He left a year later to return to the east on the ship Plymouth, but only to the land crossing at Nicaragua. A portion of the letters were published in 1873 to 1874 in the Overland Monthly and in an 1877 book, Seeking the Golden Fleece [From Kurutz].
