The author's account of her journey of feminist process over a five year period. A remarkable and insightful book that will encourage readers to challenge their thinking and promote radical change
KIRKUS REVIEW
After her metamorphosis in From Housewife to Heretic (from Mormon householder to ERA supporter), Johnson now continues her "ideological/political/spiritual journey" through civil disobedience, fasting for the ERA, lesbianism, and running for President. Riding her radical hobbyhorse roughshod over organized feminism, Johnson dismisses its success as "minuscule" for compromising with "life-hating" male culture, the origin of all evil deeds, personal and political. Standard radical epiphanies are reiterated here with relish, only now the deity is female intuition, reached by unabashed reverence of feeling, New-Age empowering techniques, and dreams. What Johnson intentionally lacks in wit (sophistication is part of the male trap), she makes up for in sincerity, encouraging women to scream a primal "YUK!" against male thought. Rhapsodic on the power of positive thinking and the positive power of women, she expresses a stringent ideology completely incompatible with politics, repelling pacifists, environmentalists, and other natural allies by insisting that their views are "eminist"- -a consequent of her central insight: by reacting to patriarchy, feminists have merely validated male power. Thus she urges a revolution in women's attitudes, a standing apart with attention to the internal voice, rather than a focus on external, political change. Part rationalization, part faith, Johnson's reductions gush ad infinitum as well as ad-nauseum. Valuable demands for women to trust themselves and for humane politics drown in New-Agespeak and unsupported, uncompromising generalization. Yet, in today's diffuse movement, extremist Johnson deserves credit for not fearing to stand out, even at risk of seeming foolish.
