About This Item

London: 'Sumptibus Societatis', 1846., 1846. 8vo. pp. xv, 139. with half-title. title in red & black with vignette. contemporary half morocco. The Gesta Stephani was originally printed by André Duchesne in his collection of Norman authors, published in Paris in 1619, and apparently transcribed from an ancient manuscript in the custody of the bishop of Laon. The work is here re-edited and preceded by an interesting preface by Richard Clarke Sewell. The authorship of the chronicle is uncertain, but it appears to have been written by an Ecclesiastic, a contemporary and partisan of King Stephen, and covers a period in English history, of which perhaps less is known than any other after the Norman invasion..
