The early 50s was the time for the dawning of the TV western,Gene Autry,Range Rider,Annie Oakley,Hop-along Cassidy,Kit Carson,Cisco Kid and the others which slowly matured into the so-called adult TV western of the late 50s early 60s; Gunsmoke,Cheyenne,Sugarfoot, Restless Gun and dozens more.
Gene Autry [1907-1998] was an American performer who gained fame as 'The Singing Cowboy' on the radio,in movies,on television and in live theatre and rodeo performances.His career spanned some 70 years in the entertainment industry.Recording and writing hundreds of songs; he was the most successful singing cowboy,who also completed 93 movies and starred in 91 television productions.Autry was ranked among the most celebrated film stars and for years was considered the most popular Western film star.By 1940,Gene Autry was the 4th highest grossing box office attraction according to Theater Exhibitors of America.
