About This Item

London: Herbert Jenkins Ltd., 1929. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 10" by 7". T. J. Rawlins. An attractive copy of this acclaimed work on preserving game by Lawrence Rawstone, with fifteen colour plates. A beautifully illustrated work, originally published privately and gifted to acquaintances of the author in 1837. For many years this book was only found in catalogues and bought mainly by collectors, but it found significant popularity and appreciation a century later by a waning shooting community who found their way of life in decline along with the country estates in which they were often based. An interesting document of a world of 'country gentlemen' now largely the reserve of history books and nostalgia. In the publisher's original green cloth binding, with titles stamped in gilt to spine and decorative gilt to boards. With fifteen coloured plates by T. J. Rawlins. Inscribed in pencil to front free endpaper by previous owner: "To Tamara, with all best wishes. From D." dated Easter 1942. In a green cloth binding, with titles stamped in gilt to spine and decorative gilt to boards. Externally very smart, with minor shelfwear and bumping to head and tail of spine. Spine has slightly faded, but gilt remains visible. Internally, firmly bound. Minor faint spotting to recto frontispiece, otherwise pages are bright and clean, with top edge painted in gilt. With fifteen coloured plates by T. J. Rawlins. Inscribed in pencil to front free endpaper by previous owner: "To Tamara, with all best wishes. From D." dated Easter 1942. Very Good Indeed
