Description:
The Furnival Books - London, 1931 Worth buying for the introduction alone; but then, so is the story. The whole volume - binding, drawing, typography, and - of course - the WRITING is deserving capital letters. Not everyone will like it. It could be strong meat for some and strictly vegan for others. But this is a fascinating example of English language writing. Odd but charming and slightly weird. Certainly of continuing interest to anyone interested in non formulaic English literature. It is only a bit wonderful. So, with the fine introduction in mind and the caveats and the plaudits, this is certainly a refreshing book to read in our excluding times, for it certainly would get short shrift from the Woke bunch who decide what gets published today. Unconventional and with a broad smile within its pages; non-conformist, un-preachy, and without a proselytising sentence in its entire content, and the excellent Rowland Hilder tipped in frontispiece. Well, I say it again, this book is worth buying for the… Read More

Description:
London: Faber and Faber, 1939 First edition. This copy has been inscribed and signed on the half-title by five children of Henry Williamson (some of whom were born at Shallowford), to Douglas Jordan, who has himself inscribed the book (see below). HB. Green cloth with gilt titles to spine, no dustjacket. 293pp. With b&w photos in plates, some of the children. Memories of Williamson's years at Shallowford in Devon and the children born and raised there. In 1939 they moved to a farm in North Norfolk, where he met Douglas Jordan, who worked as a young farmhand on his farm. He has inscribed on the front free endpaper: Douglas Jordan, Acker of the Norfolk Farm. As Henry used to call me: ''The oldest of my young ones''. So all in all an interesting and direct association to Henry Williamson. The book itself is in Good condition, clean covers but with wear to the edges, pages clean with a little spotting to ends, binding a little slack and one plate is loosening.
