Garnier Frères, (no date, but geberally believed to be the 2nd edition of 1873) ) 2 vols. large in-4 of [2] ff, xlvii-[1] pp., 584 pp. ; [2] ff, 632 pp. 12½x9¾", (31.5x24.5 cm), full vellum lettered in black and red, top edges gilt, stamp-signed on front turn-in "L. Laballe Rel".
Second printing of the edition published by Garnier in 1873. Illustrated with more than 600 woodcuts in the text and 60 woodcuts in full page size by Gustave DORÉ, also drawings, including a portrait of Rabelais in the frontispiece of the first volume. One of Gustave Doré's finest creations, very rare and sought-after in large paper. Some soiling to vellum, light foxing, near fine.
