London: Saunders and Otley, 1830. Hardcover. Very Good+. Half calf and marbled paper, gilt-stamped ornament on compartmented spine, gilt-stamped lettering in red and black leather spine labels. Boards rubbed; scuffing at corners and along spine.
Lady Morgan's was an Irish novelist, whose observations of France under the Bourbon Restoration were attacked with outrageous fury by John Wilson Croker in the "Quarterly Review," -- accusing her of Jacobinism, falsehood, licentiousness and impiety. She took her revenge with a wicked caricature of him in her novel "Florence Macarthy."
