About This Item

Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1965. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. [7], viii-xii, [3], 2-225, [1] pp. Navy cloth with copper lettering on the spine. Price of 45s. net on the front flap of the dust jacket. SEP, "Promises". Slater 581. Lyons' first book: here the classic objection to rule utilitarianism is posed. If a rule can be amended by a sub-rule that would produce more utility for an exceptional ethical case, rules in this utilitarian framework will have as many sub-rules as there are exceptional cases for the rule. Lyons argues that this results in abandoning the rule in favor of acting to produce maximum utility. Thus Rule Utilitarianism collapses to Act Utilitarianism. Lyons also argues that no form of utilitarianism can account for Fairness and Promising. An influential book in the field of utilitarian ethics and moral behavior, difficult to find in the first edition. A Near Fine book with a bit of foxing to the top textblock and minor wear to the bottom edges of the boards; dust jacket is Very Good with a few traces of edge wear and minor toning to the spine panel.
