Octavo (21cm); navy blue cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt on spine, and illustrated title label and gilt-ruled border on front cover; 155,[1] pp; with frontispiece and 15 plates of illustrations by Thomas Mitchell Peirce and Frederick. Dorr Steele. Decorative leather and gilt-stamped bookplate of Estelle Doheny at upper front pastedown. Mild wear to spine ends and extremities, upper corners gently tapped (though still sharp), with a few small scuffs to rear cover; offsetting from bookplate and a small strip of fiber tape to front endpaper, with four-digit number inked at lower rear endpaper; Very Good, bright copy with the decorative elements bright and not rubbed. Best-known mystery by the Philadelphia-born novelist and journalist, "which contains three connected short stories in the style of Robert Louis Stevenson's New Arabian Nights (1882). There's a double surprise ending" (Penzler & Steinbrunner, p.117). A Queen's Quorum title, with distinguished provenance.
