About This Item

New York, Evanston, San Francisco, London: Harper & Row, 1971. Near fine in like dust jacket.. Inscribed first edition of this political mystery-thriller, following journalist John Cotton's efforts to bring corruption to light - Tony Hillerman's second book. "Tony Hillerman knows what he's writing about because he is a fly on the wall," noted the LAWTON CONSTITUTION AND MORNING PRESS - indeed, he was THEIR fly on the wall for a number of years in the 1940s as a political editor (48). Best known for his Leaphorn and Chee mystery/thriller series, Hillerman used his intimate knowledge of journalism to craft a suspenseful ride through the intrigues of an unnamed capitol city, in which newspaper man John Cotton is party to a "political chess game in which murder becomes a play" (jacket). 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original quarter blue cloth binding with blue boards, blue and white lettering to spine. Original unclipped ($5.95) color pictorial dust jacket designed by Paul Spina. Fore-edge machine-deckle. Blue typographic endpapers. 212 pages. Inscribed by Hillerman to first blank. Jacket with mild wear to spine ends, spine with light sunning. Binding corners and spine ends a touch bumped. Sharp and bright.

Synopsis

Loaded with e-book extras (not available in the print edition), including Tony Hillerman's running commentary on his work, his series heroes Leaphorn and Chee, and a special profile of the Navajo nation.A dead reporter's secret notebook implicates a senatorial candidate and political figures in a million-dollar murder scam.Reporter John Cotton knows what to do when he finds a great story, but he is a little afraid when a big story begins to find him. It starts when a fellow reporter is murdered and his notebook, filled with information about a tax scam, ends up in John's hands. Not long afterwards, a body is discovered in John's car. Then John's car ends up in the river, a bomb is found in his apartment, and his girlfriend drops out of sight. It's up to John to unravel the mystery of the notebook and why anyone would kill for the information it contains.
