Virtue & Co., [1897], First edition, first printing with date on preface. . contemporary half morocco, gilt spine title lettering and gilt decorations, edges rubbed, one cover a little spotted, internal hinges re-enforced, overall very good but interior is clean and near fine with good impressions of plates. . 4to [28.5 x 23 cm]; 3 volumes, xii, 352; viii, 352; x, 370 pp, 46 fine colored lithographed (chromolithograph) on art paper, from paintings, hundreds of engraved illustrations, index. . The attractive colored plates are from paintings by Marie Low and Gertrude Hamilton, and the other illustrations are from drawings by F. W. Burbidge, George Shayler and May Iggulden. An impressive work with a large section on orchids and including all aspects of flower growing and all types of flowers, flowering shrubs and trees, sub-tropical growing, roses, borders, seasons, propagation, azaleas, greenhouse growing, marketing, etc. Later printings had no date on preface and some were bound in 6 volumes instead of three but with same content. A picture of this book is available on request by email.
