About This Item

[Various]., 1920-1932. Octavos. Each handsomely bound in contemporary half morocco over marbled boards; five raised bands to the spine; titles in gilt. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Each with the stylish Art Deco bookplate of Albert Andriesse to the front free endpaper; three additionally inscribed by Ella Andriesse.

The titles comprise:

RIZZI, Fortunato: Michelangelo Poeta. Milano: Fratelli Treves, 1924.

ROLLAND, Romain: Vie de Michel-Ange, avec un portrait. Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1920.

POURTALÈS, Guy de: Wagner: Histoire d'un Artiste. Paris: Librairie Gallimard, 1932.

BARTHOU, Louis: La via amoureuse de Richard Wagner. 1925.

MONNIER, Philippe: Venise XVIIIe Siècle. Paris: Perrin et Cie, 1920.

Condition is very good; the bindings square and firm with a little fading and rubbing to the spines and shelf wear to the extremities. The contents with toning and the odd small mark or annotation are otherwise in very good order. Albert and Ella Andriesse-van den Bergh were a Dutch Jewish couple who escaped from the Nazi-occupied Netherlands, fleeing 1,400 miles across Europe with their children, and eventually boarding a ship to New York from Lisbon on 15th May 1941.

The present books from their library (four in French and one in Italian) comprise two works on Michelangelo, two on Richard Wagner, and one concerning Venice in the eighteenth century.

An interesting group which the Andriesse family most likely transported with them whilst fleeing from Nazi-occupied Europe to the USA in the early years of the Second World War (with Ella's inscriptions dated 1921, 1932, and 1933).
