Jan Michel Pienkowski,born 1936,Warsaw,Poland: childhood spent in Austria, Germany and Italy.Educated in England and Wales.Read Classics and English at King's College,Cambridge and studied in London.Founder director (1961) of Gallery Five Ltd., greetings card and publishers.As an illustrator of children's books,he works in bold colours and simplified shapes, sometimes (as in the Meg and Mog series) adopting a childlike drawing style. Winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal with Joan Aiken's 'Kingdom under the Sea' (1971) and with his own pop-up book 'Haunted House' (1979).
